Automation | Artificial Intelligence | Will Automation Reduce Jobs

Let’s say I am entering a room and it’s dark. Now, what is the first thing that I should do when entering a dark room? Yes, I should turn the light on. That means I should manually press the switch on the wall and turn the light on.

Now, let’s say that instead of wall switch, I’ll install a sensor in that room.  Whenever sensor senses the someone is entering the room, the lights going to turn on automatically. And when the person leaves the room or nobody’s there the lights will turn off automatically.

So, the technology by which a process or procedure of the work is performed with minimum human effort is automation.

The word “automation” is basically originated from two words, “Automatic” and “Operation”.

Automation is a technique by which any machine or any process is made fully automatic. Earlier the work, which is done by human are now done by machines.

will automation reduce jobs?

The Rise of automation has led to some scary warnings about the future of work. A recent study shows that more than 25% of jobs are experiencing high level of disruption due to automation and this percent is going to increase in coming years. Occupations that require repetitive and predictable task in transportation, logistics and administrative support are especially high-risk.

And just think, robots don’t need health benefits, holidays, or even sleep for that matter.

When we Look around us, we can see that we are surrounded by robots, such as washing machine, dish washer, vacuum cleaner, dryers and food processors.

Automation performs a great number of tasks in our lives, directly or indirectly. They are responsible for heavy and difficult tasks in many factories. In fact, many of the tasks in production and manufacturing are carried out by the machines. During the Industrial Revolution, production based on human and animal power was replaced with a production model-based machine.

Now the model is changing, a new system has arrived in which robots control every level of the chains of production and humans are excluded.

But the Point is that will automation reduce jobs?

We can also say that automation will ultimately create new jobs.

After all similar situations have happened throughout history. One of the examples is, the replacement of horses with steam and later motorized vehicle greatly impacted the ecosystem of transportation, damaging the interests of those who earned a living from horse drawn transportation, but in time worker adapted by moving to different work fields. Today, instead of horse-drawn transportation the people are earning through motor vehicle or an electric vehicle.

According to research firm Gartner, artificial intelligence will create 2.3 million jobs and eliminate 1.8 million jobs.

Automation will not eliminate humans, but some jobs and professions will lose out to change in technology.

Automation have already captured fields like call centers, publishing, travel agencies, accounting and office administration and many others like economics, art, defense, transportation.

It seems like automation have captured every aspect of our lives. But, it’s not completely true. As these robots or automation systems are created by humans only and all jobs require empathy, critical thinking, imagination, decision making and strategy, humans still outperform robots or machines in creative fields and in fields that require physical skills.

So, the automation will always require humans for programming, research and development, for decision making, maintenance and for creative thinking and this will ultimately create millions of jobs.
